Happy Halloween and Sunday Summary

My gosh, this year has flown by! In 2 months and one day this year will be over!

I havent posted this week, so i thought i'd do a 'sunday summary' type post...

What have i done this week?

-Apart from uni, i've collected my car from Craigs, i missed driving too much!

-I've done alot of cooking, todays leek and potato gratin was particularly yummy.

-I've dyed my hair, it's not permanent, just a 28 wash one, as you know i've been trying to grow my hair and keeping it in tip top condition means no ammonia, having said this i did add a couple of blonde bits recently out of boredom, but i've just put a colour called 'iced chocolate' on, it was so dark at first but now its a nice rich brown, but thank goodness its not permanent!

Sooo dark!

-I've painted my nails numerous times, after removing the 3 weeks gel manicure my nails were nice and long but damaged but now theyre cut down and filed to my perfect length, this week theyve been particulere, ruby pumps and now essie angora cardi.

And last but not least i've purchased a few new necklaces which i love, 2 from hrhcollection's etsy store, and one from Lorraine Stanick, thecurrentcustom.com

Lisa Taubes 42" gold fill.
I love this, it really is very elegant, feels weightier than you would expect too!
The ultra sleek (silver)
Gorgeous, especially for a/w i think, It's so much heavier than i expected though! But it adds an edge to even the most plain outfit.

And The Elin (gold and gunmetal)
I loooooove this! its gorgeous, theres nothing else to say other than it's lovely!
Obviously it's costume jewellery, the gold section is very light while the gunmetal is heavier, gorgeous!

So overall a pretty decent week, im loving all the amber, golden leaves all crunchy everywhere, i like autumn, i just don't like being outdoors in autumn! haha it's so cold!

Did everyone remember to put their clocks back?

I hope you're all well, what have you been loving this week?

Trick or Treat, Smell My Feet, Gimme Something Good To Eat: Persimmon Pistachio Halloween Salad

Whah hah hah hah ha....Boooooo....Raaaaaawwwwrrrrr....AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

Happy Halloween Friends!  I wanted to leave you this week with a festive dish for your spooky weekend.  Between marathons of scary movies, costumed trick or treat-ers at the door, and identity transformation be it to witch, devil, princess, or warrior...you might only have a couple minutes of prep time for anything you'd like to serve or bring to your halloween occasions.  While this dish may not be mimicking eyeballs, or brains, or worms...it is super delicious, seasonal, and will curb your sweet tooth so you won't go munching on cheap sugary treats from the candy bowl.  Plus it's orange and green, which to me are the colors symbolic of Halloween.

We just made this as a side dish for an amazing dinner we hosted tonight for my boyfriend's parents.  On the menu: Pear and Spinach salad, Roasted Butternut Squash with cinnamon, garam masala, and curry, and persimmon pistachio salad (recipe below).  Naturally sweet, the persimmon salad is great in liu of dessert, creating the perfect end to your harvest meal.

This recipe is inspired by Cea who recently completed the 23 day cleanse i led.  Thank you Cea for being an inspiration.   Hope you all enjoy this deliciously healthy and uber-easy dish as much as we did!

Persimmon Pistachio Halloween Salad:

3 fuyu persimmons
3 pitted medjool dates
1/3 cup pistachios
small dash or two of cinnamon

remove the top green from the persimmon, cut in half, lay flat side on cutting board, and slice thinly, alternately use a mandoline.  Chop the dates.  Bang the nuts in a bag lightly with a hammer to crush them coarsely.  Mix all well in a bowl together with a dash or two of cinnamon.

THAT'S IT!  Takes about 5 minutes!

Three Ingredient Whole Food Treats: Coconut Cashew Cookies

As some of you know, for the past few weeks i've been leading an inspiring and amazing group of 23 beautiful spirits/vibrant yogis through a 23 day cleanse.  Our focus has been reconnecting not only to self, but to living in harmony with nature and therefore eating seasonally, organic, perferably local, and all nutrient dense whole foods.  Last night was our final meeting and we chose to do a potluck so to share an amazing 'cleanse approved'/whole food dish that's helped us through this change in lifestyle.  So the challenge was to bring a dish without added refined sugar or sugar substitutions, salt, soy, dairy, gluten, chocolate/coffee/caffeine, preservatives/packaged foods, corn, or of course alcohol.  These were all considered 'avoid' foods for the past month.  I was floored at the delicious and creative dishes that were presented, and was completely inspired by what my group was making/eating.  As a special little treat for being so diligent with their daily practices (abyanga, dry brushing, meditation, mudra, ishnaan, and of course healthy eating, journaling, removing toxins from house/life/relationships, and the commitment to explore and maintain this whole food approach to diet) I made these 3 ingredient (EASY) cookies.  The group asked that i post the recipe...so here it is.  I hope you enjoy these as much as we did!

Coconut Cashew Cookies:

1/4 cup raw cashews
1 cup pitted soft medjool dates
3 cups dried shredded coconut
cinnamon (just a couple dashes to your liking)

Grind the cashews in the food processor down to a paste/cashew butter.  Add the dates and process again.  Start to add the coconut in a 1/2 cup at a time.  Sprinkle in a small amount of cinnamon to your liking.  Roll this into balls and store in the fridge, or press into cookies.

Dehydrate at 145 degrees for the first 30 minutes then drop the temp to 118 degrees for another 4-5 hours, or until done to your liking.  Flip the cookies off the teflex and onto mesh an hour or so into dry time.

this recipe made about 25+ cookies

Super Charged * Super Foods: Protein Dense Plant Food

It's a fact.  We all need to eat more greens...just like our moms and grandmas have been saying for years.  Remember how Popeye relied on a can of spinach to prepare for fights with Bruno?  Spinach is 30% protein and 70% vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber.  That sounds like fighting food to me!  Meat on the other hand may be 50% protein, but the remaining 50% will be a mixture of some vitamins and saturated fat...the kind of fat that clogs our arteries.  I'm not saying you can't eat your meat, or that you need to be vegan, but i'm pointing out that it's evident that we need to up our greens to have more clean, low-fat nutrient density in our meals.  Vegans...especially those of you eating little meat/legume/grain protein, should be mowing through the chard, kale, spinach, and other greens..they are an incredibly nutrient dense protein source.  Now keep in mind, while much of these leafy greens have a high percentage of protein, it requires you eating a significant amount of them to reap the protein benefits.  Dr Douglas Graham (Author of 80-10-10, who touts a 80% fruitarian diet for athletes) suggests we eat 1 lb of leafy green vegetables a day.  I agree.  Between these greens, other vegetables, and a high fruit consumption you will already be getting about 10% of total caloric intake in protein (the RDA is 10-35% protein of daily caloric consumption and it's always set a little higher than you really need to account for any possible deficiency) plus you receive a wealth of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, without the unnecessary and harmful saturated fats that come from animal protein.

Below is a list of the protein percentages in various plant foods.  This could be a great tool for many of you living your grateful life.  Next time you're at the market, pick up a few of these higher protein foods and swap them out or add them in to your already healthy dishes....making them that much more nutrient dense!

A Newbies Guide: How To Clean Your Greens 101

Much of the produce we buy at the store has already been pre-washed and bagged or boxed to make it more convenient for the consumer.  But what if you buy your produce fresh from the farm...or without prewashing and bagging?  How do you clean your produce?

One of the easiest ways to clean all produce naturally is with White Vinegar.  Simply add some vinegar and water to a deep bowl/basin and drop in produce, swish, rinse well, and dry.  It's imperative that you dry your produce well so that it doesn't begin to mold.

Greens require a little bit more effort on your part.  Anytime you are cleaning greens you need to soak them in a big basin of water so that the dirt and any little critters from the farm can fall off.  Lightly salting the water or adding a little Apple Cider Vinegar encourages the buggy-boos to swim off their green island so you can eat bug free produce.  Transfer the leaves to a salad spinner (do not dump the basin over your colander with the leaves in it, as this just puts all the dirt and bugs back on them).  Use a salad spinner to take off most of the excess water and store in a container with a damp paper towel.  Empty water from basin and clean.

To make your greens very convenient for you to use, take the time to do this when you get home from the market.  Right away clip, clean, and wash your greens and store in the fridge so there is one less step when you're ready to use them.

As you'll see in the photos i was working with 3 bunches of chard.  While you can leave the stem on them, i like to clip the thick stem and wash and trim it up separate.  i use these stems in place celery in salad and in crudites, or in my fave:  ants on a log (a stick filled with Almond Butter and raisins or chopped date).

Follow the visual guide below for cleaning greens:

soak, swish, let dirt settle back at bottom, place leaves in salad spinner and rinse

spin dry

package with a damp paper towel at bottom

i re-use these salad containers so they don't end up in the landfill

scrub and trim stems, compost the rest.  store in fridge, immersed in water

very dirty water with little wormies and buggy-boos.  This is why we clean greens!

...and now your greens are ready for your green drinks, salads, wraps, and all the other wonderful meals that you green up!

Rapidlash serum

I purchased the rapid lash serum a couple months ago, i've been using it (almost) religiously for the past 4 weeks, 8 weeks is recommended so i thought this was a good mid point...
Before, my lashes were quite short, sparse and in bad condition from rough mascara removal.

And now?.. Well they're about 50% longer, theres more of them and they seem healthier, so far so good!
Please excuse the extreme close up!
They're much more 'fluttery' i can't wait until the 8 week mark!

Rapidlash is £39.99 at boots, which i thought was alot for what it is, but it really is worth it, and think of the points! ;)

Rococo

I've mentioned this brand before but i recieved another of their varnishes in the post today with my spacenk order, and words cannot describe how much i love it.

It's called 'stone cold karma' and is a gorgeous mix of a mink/taupe with a pink of a pinky lilac with a cool grey tinge.

This is 1 coat... ONE! Oh the craziness!
I've been waiting for my local space nk to get the gold leaf polish in stock and they just called me so ill go pick that up tomorrow too, just wait till you see it, it's beautiful!
Ohh J'adore this brand, and look at the box the polish comes in!

Hope you are all well! x

Been a busy bee! In and Out!

I hope you are all well, sorry if i've been a little quiet, i am here just a bit busy.
I thought a nice little in and out post would be fun, so here goes...

In.

- Cupcakes! As i posted about earlier this week i've bought some supplies and started baking! I'm on my fifth batch and they're all coming out perfectly. My first were Vanilla with lilac icing, then i did banana and chocolate icing, then nutella cupcakes, then for my dad's birthday vanilla with turquoise icing, and today vanilla with pink icing, and some with chocolate, what an essay!

-Clear skin and growing hair! I've been religiously taking supplements to make my hair grow, which it is, thank god, and it seems so shiny lately, but my skin seems to have cleared up too, i've changed my skincare regime recently, i'm now using a mixture of liz earle, eve lom and lancome, and so far so good! I only have on eye make up in the pic.
-University, i'm really enjoying my course, people seem to think law is boring but i really love it! I love my little room, i get on with most of my flat mates and i adore the city, so all is good!

-Tattoo's, i had another recently ( a few months ago ), and although i don't love the during, i love the after, i think as long as they mean something to you and you and your artist come up with something beautiful then why not!

-Online shopping, Living in halls, there's always someone on reception to sign for deliveries... :D Let's just say i have ALOT of parcels arriving this week! ;)

Out.

-The wind! I am so over it right now! haha.

-Taxi's. Bloody extortionate ba&$%rds!

Anyway that's it from me, i hope you've all had a lovely weekend!

Holy CSA Box!: Fruit & Veggie Lovers Git' Giddy On This!

Holy Moly! I'm so loving that i signed up for a CSA!  CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.  With a CSA you are sponsoring a farm so that it has money to run, and in exchange you get their produce.  I chose to do mine with Garden of Eden Organics and couldn't be happier with them!  I of course opted for the largest CSA box that The Garden of Eden farm offered (for a family of 4+), however, it's really only to feed me....and to a lesser degree my boyfriend.  While he LOVES all the amazing produce from the farm, I am who he calls the "Caterpillar":  A serious threat to any gardner as i am capable of mowing my way through the greens in no time!

For a sponsorship of $164 per month (so $41 smackaroos a week) every week i pick up a huge bundle of produce (plus they always give out freebies).  If you only need to feed yourself or a smaller family you could opt for a smaller box, which of course, would be a much smaller sponsorship fee.

In my box today (including the 2 freebies they gave me of 1 red lettuce head and 5 passionfruits) i received:

2 heads red lettuce
3 GIGANTIC leeks
1 bag of spinach
1 bunch of rosemary
a big bag of yellow/orange cherry tomatoes
2 orange grapefruit hybrids
2 huge reed avocados
5 passionfruits
a bag of dates (so amazing!)
a bag of green beans
a bag of red potatoes
and a bag mixed with pluots (6) and whole bunch of small gold apples.

Are you kidding me????  you couldn't get that much organic produce at any market or farmer's market that cheap!  Plus, it's all farm fresh local and seasonal.  The best part is they do their best to mix it up every week so you don't get the same stuff.  The only thing i got that was the same as last week are the dates (which are so amazing i would have had to buy them if they didn't supply them in the box).  Last week i got sorrel, chard, cilantro, romaine, 3 huge zuchinis, a big bag of apples, a big bag of oranges, 2 avos, a bag of little red tomatoes, 4 onions, a bunch of jalapenos, and...hmmm...i don't remember what else because there is no evidence of it left in the kitch (caterpillar attacked it all!).

If you haven't already looked into signing up for CSA in your area, i would highly recommend it.  If you live in San Diego, look into Garden of Eden Organics, or ask at your favorite produce stands at your local farmer's market.

Absolutely Smashing Dahhh'ling!: Fall Harvest Carrot Smash

One of my first entry's ever on this blog was "Mama Make' Again" Carrot Mash.  This dish is so simple, delicious, warming and comforting, and very reminiscent of mashed squash you might be served at Thanksgiving.  I've lightly adjusted the recipe adding in a few fall warming spices, but feel free to play with the original recipe posted, or any other spice mixtures you might like (perhaps chili powder, honey, and ghee).  Make as much or as little as you like, but the amount below is enough to feed four as a side dish.

Fall Harvest Carrot Smash

2 lbs of organic carrots, scrubbed or peeled and trimmed
**(regular sized bagged carrots, farmers market carrots, or the mini bagged cocktail carrots.)
1 - 2 Tbsp local honey
garam masala spice, scant amount
cinnamon, scant amount

Steam the carrots until they pierce easily with a form.  Transfer to a food processor.  Add in one small dash of cinnamon, 1-2 tbsp of honey, and a few small dashes of garam masala.  Go easy on the spice, you can always add more, but you can't pull it back out! Process down into a creamy-ish mash, and serve.

Erosion! First Try

For my major project I decided to make some VFX shots, since that's the stuff I eventually want to do. I teamed up with Oddne again for the animation and modelling and we came up with a (pretty lame) story, of a chess game (told you! Pretty lame). Well, it has been done quite a few times, so the first question we got was: "What makes yours different?" Answer: "F*** knows!" I don't really care for narrative or story(not for my kind of work anyway). I just wanna make cool effects. So rather than trying to tell some sort of story, I'm just gonna concentrate on doing exactly that.
The main idea was that the chess pieces actually come to life and then destroy the other pieces. By 'come to life' I literally mean come to life, as in real-life actors shot on green screen. So now I have to figure out how the transformation from 3D chess piece to real life actor is going to work. Morphing has been done so many times as well, so I try to make something different here.
Erosion, seems like cool idea. The chess pieces erode into the shape of the actor.
TESTING!!! There isn't much to find, internet-wise, on that topic, so I have to come up with something on my own.
I first thought of booleans but that would've been a bit overkill. Displacement maps, I thought would be bit tedious, since I'd have to render everytime I wanted to check. But still It seemed worth a test... and HEY! That actually isn't that bad! Putting the map on a Nurbs plane and checking with MentalRay IPR, makes this a doable job. After playing around with different kinds of noise an turbulence materials and their settings, I found what I wanted.
This is the first test.
The plane next to it is for checking where the displacement map is taking the plane in y axis .

Now it's time to put it action.

Okay, that is kid of what I want. But there are obviously some issues. First: After a certain amount of erosion the object just morphs into a smaller version of itself. Second: How am I gonna integrate the real life footage into the eroded piece? I'm sure I could think of more, but I really don't want to.
Alright then... gotta figure some stuff out.
Laters!

My first Python script!

I'm really quite proud of myself here... ok it's only 6 lines of code, but I only started learning Python yesterday. After playing around in Maya, Houdini and RealFlow I figured I should start learning Python, since all of these programs have it embedded.
After hours of reading and playing (mainly with profanity written in script form), I thought I could start with something productive. The shatter effect in Maya is really annoying me for ages now, especially the things you have to do before you can run it. Freeze transformation, delete History by type, making sure it's not assigned to a weird shader, that doesn't sound a lot, but when you're in testing mode and Maya crashes all the time, it can become a real drag. So my idea was to just take whatever object and just click a little shelf button, that would prepare the object for the shatter effect. And here it is:

import maya.cmds as cmds

if len(cmds.ls(selection=True))<1:
cmds.confirmDialog(message='Please select an object', button='OK')

cmds.makeIdentity(apply=True)
cmds.DeleteHistory()
cmds.sets(e=True, forceElement='initialShadingGroup')

The first line loads the standard Maya commands into Python.
The second line checks whether there is an object selected, and if there isn't...
the third line brings up a dialog box that says "Please select an object".
The fourth line freezes the transformation, the fifth deletes the history and the sixth assigns the intialShaderGroup to the object.
Once the script is done and tested I copied it to the shelf, next to the Create Shatter button.

I know that the entire script is written with MEL commands, and it would've been just as easy (probably even easier) to just write it MEL, but the reason I want to learn Python is that I can use it in other software packages. I believe that if I learn Python in Maya, I automatically become better in MEL, but that wouldn't be the other way around.

That is quite an entry for a 6 line script, but it's 6:10 am and I'm full of caffeine, with literally nothing else to do.
Although I could write another script... make it 7 lines this time...

Passionfruit & The Fall Green Smoothie

First off i must say that other than being familiar with the flavor of passion fruit from bottled juices i had growing up, I'd NEVER actually tried the real deal whole Passion Fruit before.  What had i been waiting for all these years?  These suckers are AMAZING, sooo flavorful, and are a great source of Vitamin A and C.  They are in season now, so head to your farmer's market and see if you can score yourself some of these bad boys.  They are oval, small to medium sized fruits with a purplish hue and lots of wrinklies.  The outer skin is thick and inedible.  Cut one through the center and squeeze or spoon out the seedy, yellow pulp and this is where all the glory is found!  A little passion fruit flavor goes a long way, as it really does have a strong unique, tropical flavor.

this is the numm-a-lish center that you can spoon out and eat
So i've been on this green smoothie kick for some time now, and without fail every time my friends and clients try them, they get addicted to these amazing and nutrient dense energizing drinks as well.  It's such a great way to get a healthy dose of greens into your diet, that might otherwise be void of the overwhelming benefits of green foods.  It's now a mandatory part of the morning routine here at my pad.  Not just for me, but if i'm not at the blender with the produce in the morning, my boyfriend starts to ask questions hinting at 'if and when' his green drink might appear.

To keep our bodies in harmony with nature, it's always important to eat with the season.  Being so, the fruits in your green drinks should be rotating throughout the year.  Here's this fall's knockout green drink Numero Uno!  Enjoy!

Green Passion Smoothie:

1 passion fruit, cut in half and use pulpy center
1 valencia orange, peeled
1 banana, peeled
5 oz baby spinach (if you are a bag spinach user, this is about one bag)
4 ice cubes
6 oz water

blend and enjoy

Would you rather?

So i was tagged by the very sweet pearls and politics to do this, so here goes!
WOULD YOU RATHER..??
..never use mascara again or bronzer again?
I'd definitely leave bronzer in the past! I rarely use it anyway to be honest, and if i do it's with a very light hand, whereas mascara totally transforms your eyes, and gives them definition that can't be achieved in any other way!
..only be able to buy high end make-up or drugstore make-up again?
High end wins by a mile, the only drugstore product which id be bothered by not being able to use is lashblast.
..go out with chipped nail varnish or unshaven legs?

Unshaven legs, at this time of year i would'nt go out bare legged anyway! Chipped nail varnish just looks a bit like you couldnt be bothered.

..go out with messy hair or no make-up?
Messy hair can be very sexy, a'la Alexa Chung, the Olsens et al. I always muss mine up a little anyway!
..have it be winter forever or summer forever?
I love winter and layering up, but if it was forever, the vitamin D deficiency would just fuck me up! So i'd have to say summer forever, hey, at least i wouldnt have to pay for spray tans!
..have permanent two inch roots or permanently unplucked brows?
Unplucked brows, im quite lucky in the sense that my brows are naturally a decent shape, whereas the roots... ombre hair won't be in forever!!
..give up all MAC or all Illamasqua products?
I'd give up illamasqua, there aren't really any star products from them for me, whereas i love mac, also mac collections would keep it from getting boring!

I hope someone enjoyed that!
I'm not tagging anyone because i'm in a bit of a rush, so if you read this, you should do it too!!

Venomous Villains

I'm sure you're getting a bit fed up of all the vv posts, but i thought i'd add my 2 cents worth :)

So... what did i get?

First up, the lipsticks.. i got...
Heartless, a gorgeous cherry red

Innocence, beware, which i did'nt think i'd love, but oh i do!

And toxic tale... which is so bright, but Goooooorgeous!

Next up, i chose bit of an apple blush, which i really do love, its like toxic tale in blush form, as you can see it gives a lovely flush!
I asked for the penultimate liner, but ended up with the greasepaint stick, ill see how it is but i might give it to a friend as its not really my kind of thing, but i also got de-vil eyeshadow, which i think is gorgeous, its like a coppery pinkish goldish pot of loveliness!

On the top we have toxic tale, innocence beware, heartless, de-vil, the grease-paint-stick thing (ugh!), and bite of an apple.

Last but not least, i got one vv nail lacquer and 2 of the new a/w ones...
Scuse the messy application, but i've just had a nails inc 3 week french manicure and i didnt want to leave these on too long.

Concubine, a gorgeous sparkly red, Earthly harmony, alot like under my trenchcoat from opi sephora, and from vv, formidable which i think is the star of the vv polishes.

Phew, that was a long post, well done if you made it to the end!
I'd love to hear what you got from VV! There was a queue outside MAC when i got there which i was'nt expecting, but as i got there for opening time i was fine!

The weather's getting colder...

...And that means new season make up changes!
Which for me is warmer, brighter colours, flushed cheeks, less pastel nails and most importantly protection... No! not that kind ;) against the wind and rain!

The By Terry baume de rose, it really is lovely, its very soothing on the lips and not sticky i find, and looks very kissable indeed!
When in space nk purchasing this, a display of nail varnish caught my eye, i had never heard of rococo and bought full metal jacket with some trepidation, but any worries were ill founded, this is so gorgeous, its a pink/brown based sparkly polish, it's beautiful, ive since bought 'jaded'.

I nipped into mac, and bought 2 of the new longwear lipsticksin perpetual flame and unlimited, plus the fabulous felines makeup bag, i thought its gorgeous for this time of year, all warm and fuzzy! haha. i also got ladyblush, which gives a gorgeous flush.

And finally we have lovelorn and going dutch lipsticks, peaches blush, 2 autumnal shu eyeshadows and the new jo malone pear and freesia (which is BEAUTIFUL!)
