Tick Box: Other
Mezzanine level (above Waitrose), Southside Shopping Centre, Garratt Lane, SW18 4TF 9am-midnight

Artist Maru Rojas questions the restrictive nature of ticking a box to define yourself when filling out forms. Sending out postcards randomly around the borough, she has invited people to describe their ethnicity without having to fit pre-set categories. What she received back is presented here in this exhibition that playfully explores our notions of ethnicity and identity. Free for the duration of the festival.

Nesting Place
Wandle Delta, Bell Lane Creek, The Causeway, SW18 1EJ

Objects that might have been on board when the boat was in its heyday surround the vessel and are revealed and concealed with the tide. The boat has suffered a change of fortune, as has the Wandle, once the fastest-flowing river for its size in the country. The river is now being regenerated and the boat is a home for eels and ducks.

The Pump House Gallery in Battersea Park hosts theatre company People Show for a week of fantastical performances. Ghosts are about, and some have dogs. Magical water features are created by human fountains. The Pump House is itself transformed to present living local stories from its 150 years history. This project is devised by Roehampton and ALRA students led by People Show,

with input from local residents. People Show has performed all over the world since 1966 - in streets, fields, night clubs, telephone boxes, toilets, parks, trains, glasshouses and even in theatres. Each show is the unique sum of the imaginations of the people involved in its creation. The non-autocratic ethos is as relevant today as it was in the beginning.

Jodie Carey - Somewhere, Nowhere
Pump House Gallery, Battersea Park, SW11 4NJ
11am-5pm Wednesday - Sundays

Jodey Carey - Untitled (Cake Stand)
Image courtesy of Wandsworth Arts Team
A solo show by UK-based artist Jodie Carey, ‘Somewhere Nowhere’ presents the culmination of Carey’s three-year bursary awarded by The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in partnership with Chelsea Arts Club Trust and includes new work made for Pump House Gallery.

‘Somewhere, Nowhere’ centres around ideas of time, memory and materiality. The focus is on a transitory, ephemeral and corporeal beauty, evoking notions of time passing, memories fading, absence and loss. Materials such as blood, bone and ash become pigments that stain the floor and mark the walls; traces of life simultaneously anonymous and intimate. Evoking the idea of home and its history in the gallery space, ‘Somewhere, Nowhere’ uses the house as a metaphor for what it is to be human. It speaks of peeling wallpapers, stained carpets, of life’s general wear and tear, of homes left behind and ultimately the fragility and vulnerability of human life.
