Joze London:The Library Space Battersea

This new exciting creative Arts Space in Battersea was founded in 1909 as the Edwin Tate Library, the building was once part of Westminster Kingsway College. With its tall ceilings, narrow winding staircases and gallery balcony, it is not difficult to imagine the space as it once was. During its conversion into an arts space the aim was to leave the building unchanged as much as possible. Rather, a few discreet tweaks were made in order to render the space more flexible. In leaving the space in its original form and highlighting its previous life, The Library’s aim is to provide a characterful alternative to the white walled space in which art is often viewed, to encourage the childlike thrill of exploration and discovery, of peering into dark nooks and finding intriguing things in unexpected places will be used in the future to host a program of contemporary arts, music and fashion events.

Jose and co-curator Georgina Mascolo have assembled an eclectic mix of artists and designers from all over the world, both established artists such as renowned photographer Pattie Boyd and sculptor William Peers. The collaborative works draw on mediums including photography, painting, sculpture, glass and ceramics.

With its inaugural exhibition: ‘Joze London’, idea will be put into play, with The Library’s creaky wooden floors and tall dark cabinets being transformed into a maze of artworks waiting to be discovered. ‘Joze London’ is the London version of the successful annual exhibition ‘Joze Show’ by curator Jose Waldie.


Featuring works by: Nick and Sarah Allen, Imelda Apps, Nick Bodimeade, Pattie Boyd, Luca Bonato, Matthew Chambers, Peter Coates, Jason De Caires-Taylor, Emma De Clercq, Kate Jones and Stephen Gilles, Ken Gill, Thomas Lumley, Georgina Mascolo, Roger Mavity, Anna Norlander, William Peers, Virginia Ray, Antonio Riello, Andrea Schulewitz, Luke Stephenson, Simon Ward, Chris Whittaker, Sandra Whitmore.

Good news future exhibitions plan to play on the connotations of the library – working with themes such as ‘the archive’ and the Dewey Decimal System as starting points which artists will be invited to respond to.
